Crunching Munching Caterpillars 🐛🐛

As always, it has been a very busy week in The Ark! We were very excited to see our caterpillars, Dave, Nate, Pat, Taylor and Peter Andre were and were surprised at how big they were already! We started the week (and most sessions) looking at our 'babies' and passing them carefully around, being gently and looking with awe and wonder as they moved! The shock of the 'frass' (caterpillar poo!) that had begun to appear by the end of the week was a huge delight and shock too 🤣

So what have we been up to? Well... what haven't we?!

We have continued in Phonics with our Metal Mike work. Many of us have made our own robots and are enjoying feeding him/her our CVC pictures as our grown-ups sound out words for us to aurally blend. Well done to all the Mummies and Daddies as you are really doing a superb job! We have been exploring this in Nursery too as well as helping Carlo in his department store (Phase One Phonics Games by Smart Learning) to aurally blend the word for the item he wants from the delivery van. We are doing so well!

With Miss G we have been exploring the lifecycle of the butterfly and have all made our very own lifecycle of a butterfly. Most of us are confidently able to talk about the four stages in the life of a butterfly and we enjoyed using craft materials to represent each stage. Look! Don't they look fabulous!

With Miss B we have been counting out in order to give our caterpillars the correct number of body parts to match the number. This is trickier than it sounds as counting a group of objects relies on 1:1

correspondence (saying a number name for each item as it is touched). However in 'counting out' we have to remember to stop when we have met the number we wish to count too. But we all tried exceptionally well and enjoyed making 'longer' caterpillars!

In our Continuous Provision we have had lots of caterpillar themed things including colouring-in copies of scenes from The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Here is an Arklet who really looked at the laminated, coloured version from the story and replicated this herself. Watch out Eric, you have competition!

This week has been Number 3 week and we have enjoyed singing our counting songs, singing the 'Number 3' song and exploring ways of making three in different ways. Lots of us are becoming increasingly quick at recognising the number three as well as different ways to represent the quantity of three. Well done guys, keep it up!

Shhh! Don't tell Mr Young... but we have used (clean) loo roll to wrap ourselves up pretend to be caterpillars in our chrysalis breaking out from our chrysalis/ cocoon /pupa! We LOVED this hee hee

(sadly my ICT skills are not super enough to post a video with the Foo fighters 'Break Out' track as the backing track (in the correct position of the song)- Rest assured it was fun and maybe next week we can bring you a clip...

We have also explored using the giant parachute to help sing and act out the song, "The Wheels on the Bus," which was very funny when it was quite windy! Oops!

Hope you enjoyed this week's installment..see you next week for more!
